its 2011 not 2009 thus its dated
By gerit
Good computer after you get rid of vista or windows xp (software over 10 years old) and add windows 7. granted the chipset supports 32 bit windows 7 and can accept 2gb more ram, in 32 bit configuation for a total of 4gb. The processor is a dual core celleron 1.2ghz so on par with your 2011 smartphone. This is very durable with a magnesium case but scratches easily and inturn soon looks like it was in Iraq and shipped via USAIR baggage. Nice to have DVD player but with ROXIO or I-tunes codecs added its a way more stable dvd player. Battery is great(6-7hrs.) but again these were not produced past 11/15/2009 and for 2-3 years - have been sitting in some warehouse. When the US DOD made a 11,000 unit gov't purchase for the armed forces and then later cancelled the purchase for an undisclosed reason from Panasonic these were sent back to Panasonic -- still new and unopened but then Panasonic put vista or xp pro on them and were sent to US Gov't Authorized Panasonic dealers like BIZCO Technologies and CDW and 3 others in quarter 4 2010 and quarter 1 2011 for between $400 - $700 usd ( price to consumer)According to Panasonic resale by unauthorized resellers will = warranty nullification ( no warranty unless you the owner was the original purchaser from the 5 resellers )**Be carefull who you buy from make sure their authorized Panasonic Dealers. Call Panasonic prior with the serial # to verify warranty is really 3 years.Nice computer all things considered, three year warrnty is nice but cross your t's and dot your i's -- do your homework before you buy this from someone you don't know.

Excellent Netbook type laptop
By Paul J. Yoh
I had Netbooks from other manufacturers and none compare with the Panasonic Toughbook W8 for quality and usability. A good keyboard is essential for ease of typing and Panasonic has the best keyboard that I had used in a long time since Apple Powerbooks. I can type fast and accurately and the keyboard is buttery smooth when typing. The round touchpad is not multitouch but it is excellent and accurate for usage. Much better than the other cheap Netbooks.I still use the Windows XP on it and I find that I have NO PROBLEMS whatsoever! I have Chrome installed and the latest Firefox and no problems. I had so much problems with a newer Vista OS on 14 inch HP that I was ready to just crush it! And the HP laptop had double the speed and double the memory to this unit and yet it was SLOWER than the Panasonic Toughbook !! I had sent to HP twice and they sent it to me with everything erased including reverting back the Windows 7 to Vista. The weight of this laptop is just perfect. About 3 pounds. I have the bad habit of carrying laptops by holding to the frame of the screen with one hand. It is light enough that it was not a problem for me.I find that the screen is very readable for texts and ebooks. I have the Nook and Kindle and Logos app installed and works excellent.I use Picasa to edit photographs I take and comes out fine. It is NOT a professional level monitor which I did not expect it to have anyway. Since I use Canon 5D Mark II and take raw images with 25 megabytes per picture, the processing does take time but I find that it was manageable. It was the compromise of portability versus performance.Battery life was excellent and Panasonic recommended to use the ECO mode which means it charges up to 80% of total capacity and that supposedly lengthens battery longevity. ECO mode makes it so that instead of the 7-8 hrs it is instead 4-5 hours or less depending what you are doing.Bluetooth on this laptop is excellent. I had used it with my Smartphone Nokia N900 to tether to get online using the phone's data plan. Worked with no problems. I even transferred 1.2 gb of map information via bluetooth and yes it took long time but it worked without hiccup. This laptop is desirable enough that people are willing to pay around 500 hundred dollars at ebay used. Consider that one could purchase a brand new laptop with another brand name for $300 nowadays. I made mistake of purchasing 350 dollar netbook and was so frustrated with it I could really not use it but only for browsing the internet.
