Great Laptop
By E. Glisch
I bought one of these back in December of 2005, and it is still going strong! It's a super-durable laptop, and still has some great features considering its age, including (at least for the model I purchased) a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen. I've since upgraded it (2 GB memory, 320 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Ultimate) and handed it off to a friend, who thinks it's great. It's still a very good laptop; had I not had a friend interested in it, I would probably still be using it to this day. After having two Dell laptops over the last seven years, I am convinced that a Dell (and possibly laptops from other brands) will last a long time as long as it is properly cared for. Keep the inside of your computer clean and replace parts that go bad when necessary, handle it with care (don't drop it! Or at least, try not to), use it on cool and well-ventilated surfaces, run a defragmenter along with disk/registry cleanup utilities (i.e., Ccleaner) on a regular basis, have a good antivirus program (for example, Avast! Antivirus) and run a full system scan every now and then, run the OS and programs from a separate partition (store OS and program files on C:, keep personal files such as documents, photos, etc., on D:), tweak the operating system for maximum performance, keep software up-to-date, avoid using sleep/hibernate, keep files orderly, don't run too many programs at once, and your computer will last a long time and be blazing fast, even at seven years old. My old Dell could probably outperform some of the new Dell computers that come loaded with bloatware; I'm convinced that bloaty software is how computer manufacturers are able to perpetuate their computer sales. Within two years, the combination of new software releases, pre-loaded bloatware, and neglect in general either fries a laptop or slows it down to the point that people think their computer has become obsolete, so they go buy a new one. We're all being had by computer companies that want us to think we need a new computer every two years, when in fact if we were to maintain them, even a ten year old computer would probably meet the computing requirements of most. All right, enough ranting.

Bad hard drive
By LD
I purchased my Dell for $286 in Jan 2012. I was having problems in July so I took it to the Geek Squad. The testing showed the computer needs a new hard drive. Since the computer is more then 5 years old I had to look around for a PATA drive. I ended up getting a new hard drive and the recovery disks from Dell. I didn't even think about requesting the recovery disks when I purchased the computer. Also to register the computer in my name I have to provide Dell with purchase information. So far this has cost me $169. not including the cost to the Geek Squad. My daughter and I bought my grandson a computer in July through Amazon. It immediately started having problems. The Geeks advised us to return it to the seller if we can.I guess my luck isn't very good with computers.
